By Joe SnyderSerra High’s track and field athletes exceled in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV Championships on May 17 at Moorpark High but saw the more prestigious Southern Section Masters Championships (with Divisions I, II, III and IV combined) way tougher and more competitive last Saturday at the same place. As of last Saturday, the Cavaliers advanced just one athlete in Raelyn Pleasant to the CIF-State Meet after she finished fifth in the girls’ triple jump at 37 feet, five inches.

By Joe SnyderPrior to last Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Division IV Track and Field Championships, Serra High head coach Princeton Williams was confident that the Cavaliers could win the championship. It ended up with the Cavaliers tying for the title with Viewpoint High from Calabasas with 49 points apiece Saturday at Moorpark High. Foothill Tech from Ventura finished third with 37 points. Otis “Tre” Harrison repeated as Division IV 300-meter intermediate hurdle champion at 38.2 seconds.

By Joe SnyderGardena High senior Devin Lee came out on top of the boys’ 200-meter dash in last Thursday’s Marine League Track and Field Championships at Carson High. Lee won the race at 22.88 seconds to win over second-place Breeden Villagas from San Pedro (23.11) and third-place Jaquer Lewis (Harbor City Narbonne; 23.78). Lee also finished fourth in the 100 clocking 11.18 as he advanced to the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Prelims in both races. “I feel good,” Lee said about his win in the 200.

By Joe SnyderAfter a pair of earlier losses to St. Paul in the Del Rey League, Serra High’s baseball team came through with a 9-4 win over the host Swordsmen on April 29 in Santa Fe Springs. Trailing 3-1 after the first inning, the Cavaliers, who are 4-7 in league and 17-7 overall, let loose for seven runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. From there, each team added just one more run. Senior C.J. Hughes had a big day, going 2-for-3 with five runs batted in and one run scored.
