By Joe SnyderAfter a pair of earlier losses to St. Paul in the Del Rey League, Serra High’s baseball team came through with a 9-4 win over the host Swordsmen on April 29 in Santa Fe Springs. Trailing 3-1 after the first inning, the Cavaliers, who are 4-7 in league and 17-7 overall, let loose for seven runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. From there, each team added just one more run. Senior C.J. Hughes had a big day, going 2-for-3 with five runs batted in and one run scored.

By Joe SnyderSerra High’s baseball team is red hot in non-league play but remains cold in the rigorous Del Rey League after getting shut out by St. Paul 4-0 last Thursday at Serra. The loss saw the Cavaliers drop to 3-7 in league but are 15-7 overall after rolling over Van Nuys High 13-2 in a San Fernando Tournament game last Saturday at home. Serra is 12-0 in non-league and tournaments.

By Joe SnyderSerra High’s baseball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 4-3 non-league win over Leuzinger High from Lawndale on April 16 at Serra. The Cavaliers took advantage of five walks from Olympian pitching to score the three runs. Tim Pryor, Joshua Bronson, and Isaiah Molina each scored on the bases-on-balls.

By Joe SnyderSerra High’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams vied in Friday and Saturday’s prestigious Arcadia Invitational and came out with strong showings. The big highlight for the Cavaliers was Otis “Tre” Harrison who won his heat and finished second overall in the boys’ 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 38.04 seconds on Saturday. He was just .03 seconds slower than the top overall finisher in Samel Eminovic from Mountain Ridge, Ariz. (38.01).

By Joe SnyderNorth Torrance High’s baseball team took a rest from the Pioneer League and recorded two non-league wins at home over Playa del Rey St. Bernard 9-8 in nine innings last Thursday and 10-2 over Santa Monica St. Monica on Friday. Against St. Bernard, it was mostly a see-saw game. North held a 6-4 lead after three innings and were tied at seven after four and eight after five. The Saxons pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
