It’s unbelievable and worrisome to return from COP29, the climate conference, having been surrounded by nations and corporate lobbyists advocating for continued and even increasing fossil fuel use. It reminds me of decades ago when Big Tobacco used disinformation and lobbying to weaken health policy on smoking. But we can draw hope from public health winning that battle and creating strong regulations limiting the ability of tobacco companies to influence public policy.

As out-of-control, climate-fuelled wildfires burn in western Canada and elsewhere across the country, the Port of Vancouver steadfastly continues to serve as North America’s export hub for one of the most climate-damaging fossil fuels: coal. There is a dangerous mismatch between words and deeds when it comes to coal in Canada. Now is the right time for this government to ban thermal coal exports, for the benefit of people and the planet.

Here at COP28, the UN climate conference in Dubai, health is in focus. Me and my fellow medical professionals are here with the message that the climate crisis is a health emergency, and phasing out fossil fuels is the cure. Unfortunately, fossil fuel lobbyists are also here in droves trying to delay action. If they win, the consequences for human health will be catastrophic.
