    The cat and mouse game of computer security has been on since at least the 1970s. There was John Draper’s infamous hack of telephone systems using a toy whistle from a Cap’n Crunch cereal box in 1971. On the good guy side, Ray Tomlinson wrote what is regarded as the first antivirus software in 1972, when his Reaper program eradicated the Creeper worm that his colleague Bob Thomas unleashed in an effort by the two to demonstrate possible scenarios. Fast forward to today.

    Thousands of ordinary citizens are already using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques, whether they know it or not. Online sleuths attempt to solve crimes by scouring social media posts for clues, and dating app users run potential suitors’ profiles through a reverse image search to verify they are who they say. OSINT—once the preserve of intelligence agencies and law enforcement—is becoming accessible, and artificial intelligence (AI) is powering the change.

    The second week of each December, Computer Science Education Week introduces K-12 students to computer science. This timing was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Grace Murray Hopper, December 9, 1906. Rear Admiral Hopper is well known to the CS community for her many contributions to computing. For those who never saw her, I recommend her 1986 television appearance on ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ where her personality shines through.

    More than a quarter of children under 5 have eyesight or hearing issues which require investigation or treatment, a charity programme which provides vision and hearing screenings has found. Since 2020, 62 out of 260 children screened for eye problems across eight nurseries and preschools have been referred for further testing. In the same period at the same schools, 83 of 212 children tested for hearing problems were recommended for some sort of follow-up.
