The Dragons secured a three tries to one trial match win over the Wests Tigers at a sun-soaked Leichhardt Oval on Sunday afternoon. It marked a successful outing for the new-look squad who took to the field for the first time under new head coach Nathan Cross. The Dragons, who were without NSW Under 19s duo Kasey Reh and Indie Bostock as well Sara Sautia (foot), showed plenty of ticker in defence in the win whilst showcasing some strong attacking moments across the 70 minutes.

It took just five minutes for the Dragons to open their account through Sione Finau who finished off a textbook shift play. Willie Talau’s men went back-to-back the following set off the back of strong Luciano Leilua and Viliami Fifita carries. The halves combined off it to shift the ball out to a flying Tyrell Sloan who dove over in the right-hand corner to make it a double-digit difference.

The clash got off to a chaotic sort of start with Kade Reed forcing an error off his opening kick of the match to earn the Red V an attacking opportunity. Wests Tigers centre Max Taotua scooped up an awry Dragons pass to shoot off downfield only to be rounded up by Jesse Williams. The visitors swung the ball left the following play but some desperate Dragons scramble saw their raid held off.

It’s been a big few years for Hurstville United junior Cyrus Stanley-Traill who will this Thursday get the opportunity to don a Blues jersey for the first time in the side’s Under 19s State of Origin clash. NSW have come out on top in the past three fixtures and are desperate to extend that streak come Thursday night on the Sunshine Coast. Stanley-Traill joins fellow Dragons Jacob Halangahu and Hayden Buchanan – who both helped the state to a victory 12 months ago – in this year’s lineup.

Jacob Halangahu and Hayden Buchanan are 12 months removed from their first taste of the Origin arena – a 14-10 Under 19s win over the Maroons at Leichhardt. Life is a little different for the duo this time around. Now among the senior players, the young Dragons are learning what it takes to be a leader in a high intensity environment.

One of my favourite pieces I’ve put together. The best thing about Loko is how contagious his energy is. I hope the Wollongong crowd makes him feel welcome this afternoon. Go well, big boy. https://t.co/5BKI3bKx40
