BATAVIA — St. Charles North’s Emmy Skidmore thought that she could escape the goal in her junior season. After spending each of her first two seasons as a backup on the junior varsity team, she entered her third season hoping to focus on playing as a midfielder. But when the North Stars’ starting keeper Lauren Korioth got a red card in their loss to Naperville Central, she knew that she would not only have to play in net for the rest of that game, but also in Thursday’s matchup against Batavia.

When the St. Charles North girls basketball head coach position opened up in 2016, Grant Oler was hesitant to put his name forward. Oler graduated from St. Charles North in 2006 and joined the staff in 2012. He felt that he was unready, and instead supported fellow staff member Mike Tomczak, who went on to assume the position.

St. Charles East 2, Kaneland 1 (8 innings)Holly Smith was the walk-off hero for the Saints (9-4) after hitting a single in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win over the Knights (9-4). Besides Smith, Addison Wolf led the Saints’ offense, going 3 for 3 at the plate while stealing three bags. Makayla Van Dinther got the win in the circle, allowing two hits and one run (none earned) while striking out 10 in eight innings.
