Players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft became eligible to sign contract extensions on Jan. 6, a day after the 2024 regular season ended. This three-season waiting period on draft picks signing new deals started with the 2011 draft class as a part of the rookie wage scale implemented in the 2011 NFL collective bargaining agreement. Since the deals for draft choices are four years in length, 2025 is a contract year for 2022 draftees.

June 2 used to be a more consequential date in the NFL. It was the beginning of the final wave of free agency. Teams would primarily release players with excessive contracts or declining performance because the bonus proration from the remaining or future years is delayed until the following league year when a player is released after June 1. In some years, over 20 players were released after June 1.

Lamar Jackson posted a cryptic message in an Instagram story several days ago that prompted speculation whether he was referring to his contract. "Once I show my love they show me why they don't deserve it, right then soon as I put my guard down that's when they hurt me," the quarterback wrote attached to a photo from a youth football camp.

Chris Jones (2023) & Trent Williams (2024) know from personal experience.

@corryjoel Yep. Those TC fines ($50K per day missed) as you know are mandatory and cannot be waived by the Club. Would be over $2M in fines for that category alone.

Thanks, @AgentJesseJames!

I was just on @SiriusXMNFL last Friday discussing this exact arbitration case that Joel is pointing out. Joel is always top notch and accurate in his posts. Tolling isn’t something that we see often, but it’s an extremely important factor when holding out.

It's easy to talk about not playing in May. If Trey Hendrickson isn't willing to incur a $104,768 fine for skipping the 3-day June minicamp, there's no way he's going to be comfortable with a $50,000 fine for each missed day of training camp.

Some nice clarification by Joel here regarding whether Trey Hendrickson's contract would toll if he decided to sit out the 2025 season. Hendrickson stated yesterday that he would not play in 2025 under his current contract.
