On 4 March, the Senedd Cross-Party Groups (CPGs) on Smoking & Health and Poverty came together for a joint meeting. Both groups are chaired by John Griffiths MS, with the Bevan Foundation providing the secretariat function for the Poverty CPG, and ASH Wales providing the secretariat for Smoking and Health. The meeting was held in advance of national No Smoking Day on 12 March.

The Expert Advisory Group on Childcare (EAGC) is a collective body of non-profit, third-sector organisations focused on childcare, of which the Bevan Foundation is a founding member. Established in February 2024, the group aims to unify the efforts of these organisations to develop comprehensive recommendations for improving the childcare system in Wales.

New Zealand animation studio Stretchy has established a studio at the University of Canterbury (UC) to house production on feature Kiri and Lou Rarararara!. As part of the collaboration students from UC’s Bachelor of Digital Screen with Honours program will have the chance to attend guest lectures or workshops with Stretchy animators from next year. Hand-crafted in stop motion, Kiri and Lou features clay creatures set in a whimsical world created from cut-out paper.

The Ausfilm board has named Samantha Martin-Williams independent chair for a three-year term. She takes over from Sam Mostyn, who has stepped back after five years to take on the role of Governor-General of Australia. Martin-Williams’ experience includes stints as a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia, and a professor of practice at the Newcastle Business School at the University of Newcastle Australia.

SXSW Sydney 2024 Screen Award winners have been announced, with Australian feature A Grand Mockery taking home the Best Feature Film award. Directed by Samuel Dixon and Adam C. Briggs and filmed on soft luminous super-8, A Grand Mockery follows Josie who leads a life of passive mundane displeasure before his psychic ills deform him and lead him to roam the rainforest hinterlands of Queensland. Sam Hayes’ coming-of-age film dramedy Pools took home the SXSW Sydney 2024 Audience Award.
