No idea—including the Hamas idea of annihilating Israel—can be altogether “killed" or “defeated." However, an idea can be rendered less attractive to its followers if it is seen as detrimental to their needs. Ideas are more or less attractive to the degree that they are seen to serve people's need for significance. Defeating Hamas could make its extremist ideology less attractive, and a two-state solution more attractive. By Arie W.

Only independent nationhood can demonstrate to Palestinians that there is a better and more attractive alternative to Hamas. A common criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza is that Hamas is an idea, and because an idea cannot be defeated, it is futile to fight Hamas.

In 1993, Abu Ala led a small team from the Palestine Liberation Organization that conducted secret discussions in Norway with a small Israeli team (of which I was a member), led by Uri Savir, the director general of the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
