The charge covers everything from maintaining the grid - the upkeep of the pipes and wires that provide power to our homes - to social and environmental schemes, meter readings, repairs and installations. As these costs have risen, so too has the amount we pay for them. The money needs to be found from somewhere, but are progressive energy bills the answer? Absolutely not. Why should wealthier people pay more for their gas and electricity? The price is the price, surely.
