More than halfway through the year, democracy and authoritarianism appear to be playing to a draw. Election results have been studied for factors explaining the support for right-wing nationalist parties where they are in ascendance.

The Super Eagles face a critical must-win World Cup qualifying match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Friday. The match will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Coincidentally, this is the same venue where the Eagles suffered a defeat to Bafana Bafana almost seven years to the date (10 June, 2017). The must-win nature comes after the Eagles earned only two points from their first two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Patty Gasso’s Oklahoma Sooners have done it again. Oklahoma slugged its way to a record fourth straight NCAA softball title, getting a go-ahead, bases-clearing double from Cydney Sanders and beating Texas 8-4 on Thursday night for a two-game sweep of the Women’s College World Series championship. The Sooners won their eighth title overall, all under coach Gasso, and moved into a tie with Arizona for the second-most World Series championships behind UCLA’s 12.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced ticket prices and sales points for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup qualifier between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana. The match will take place on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m.. Tickets go on sale Thursday morning and will be available for N1,000 (Popular Stands) and N3,000 (VIP) at designated locations.

Unconventional? Unusual? Atypical? You bet, but the Rockies will take victories by any means necessary. Thursday night at Busch Stadium, they used a ragged but effective start by Cal Quantrill, a starring turn by Michael Toglia, and a hefty dose of small ball to beat the Cardinals 3-2. The Rockies had just four hits, marking just the third time in their last 82 games (since 2019) they won a game with four or fewer hits.

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees slugger Juan Soto was removed from Thursday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins with left forearm discomfort. Soto will undergo imaging Friday. New York manager Aaron Boone said it’s too early to tell if the right fielder will need to miss time. “I don’t know what it’s going to show,” Soto said.

GMs are said to be especially interested in what the Mets do, since they may have more tradeable players than anyone. Pete Alonso, Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, J.D. Martinez, Harrison Bader, Jake Diekman, Adam Ottavino, Reed Garrett and Sean-Reid Foley should have value, and if they pay deals down, so do Starling Marte and Jose Quintana. Jeff McNeil’s value is nil now, and that unfortunately comes when a change of scenery looks advisable. The Mariners always liked him.

OAKLAND — Bryan Woo likely will go down in the history books as the final Oakland-born pitcher to start a game at the Coliseum, and the Seattle Mariners right-hander looked right at home against the A’s on Thursday afternoon. Woo, who grew up 10 minutes away from the Coliseum in Alameda, allowed two hits and struck out six in six innings and combined with three relievers on a two-hit shutout to hand the A’s a 3-0 loss before an announced crowd of 6,571.
