AbstractPrecise wiring within sensory systems is critical for the accurate transmission of information. In the visual system, S-cone photoreceptors specialize in detecting short-wavelength light, crucial to color perception and environmental cue detection. S-cones form specific synapses with S-cone bipolar cells (SCBCs), a connection that is remarkably consistent across species. Yet, the molecular mechanisms guiding this specificity remain unexplored.

The news that the Prime Minister has finally reached an agreement to rejoin science research programme Horizon Europe is a relief to us all in academic institutions across Scotland and the rest of the UK. As president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s national academy, I wholeheartedly welcome the news that the UK is once again to become a fully-fledged member of the project. The only issue is that it took far too long to get over the line.
