    I don't plan to be late for my own funeral. That would mean blowing my final deadline. So we were all on time for my father's recent services. Alas, the funeral was late for us. Yes, there we were, less than an hour before we were to follow the hearse to the New Rochelle, N.Y., church my father had been a parishioner at since 1965. Sixty years of appearances almost every Sunday, yet somehow they weren't expecting him. Our contact at the funeral home said "sorry" more than Justin Bieber and Brenda Lee.

    Several years ago, my Uncle Fred took me, my two brothers and my father target shooting. We knew Fred (my mom's brother) could shoot. Fred learned to hunt from his father, and taught it to his own son. As for the rest of us, well, let's just say the clay pigeons didn't have much to worry about. Then my dad picked up a rifle. Dad 1, clay pigeon 0. He kept doing it. What ... exactly ... is happening? we wanted to know, since we had never seen Dad with a gun. "I was a sharpshooter in the Army," he replied.
