Leilani Vaughn is charged with second-degree cruelty to animals and obstructing government operations, both misdemeanors carrying a maximum sentence of a year in jail upon conviction.

    By JOHN BURNETT Hawaii Tribune-Herald Hawaii County is following through on its plans to fence off the Hilo Municipal Golf Course from nearby residents, to the displeasure of at least some of the neighbors. Numerous individuals have contacted the Tribune-Herald since a March 12 article detailing the county’s plans, all of them in opposition. Almost all are senior citizens. Most wouldn’t go on the record or requested anonymity for speaking, fearing reprisals from the county.

    By JOHN BURNETT Hawaii Tribune-Herald A 51-year-old Hilo man pleaded not guilty Monday to three counts of second-degree sexual assault, plus burglary and violating an order for protection. Hilo Circuit Judge Henry Nakamoto ordered Jonathan Lesieur to return at 8:30 a.m. June 24 for “further proceedings.”Although no trial date was set Monday, Deputy Prosecutor Haaheo Kahoohalahala estimated trial in the case would take two weeks.
