NEWPORT NEWS — A Friday night multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 caused hours of lane closures and many serious injuries, including those to a five-year-old who was ejected from a head-on collision, Virginia State Police said. Both eastbound and westbound lanes between mile markers 249 and 250 were closed for over four hours, state police said in a statement. That’s near the Lee Hall reservoir and the Fort Eustis Boulevard exits.

NORFOLK — An early Thursday morning shooting near the Olde Huntersville neighborhood has left a man dead, police said. Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Goochland Street, near its intersection with Chapel Street and close to Tidewater Drive, at around 2 a.m. Upon arrival, first responders found a 19-year-old man with life-threatening gunshot wounds. National Weather Service forecasters in Wakefield have a high confidence in there being a prolonged heat wave next week, with experts now expecting heat indices will exceed 110 degrees for much of the Mid-Atlantic region and Hampton Roads. It’s the region’s first taste of hazardous heat for the season. The wave lasts through next week. Forecasters said Friday there was a “greater than 50-60% probability of heat indices at or above 110 degrees each day Monday-Thursday,” especially inland.

PORTSMOUTH — Police have opened an investigation for a man found shot dead in the Park Manor area Thursday evening. Officers were called to the 600 block of Dunedin Road around 7-7:30 p.m., which is around the edge of an apartment complex and a street over from Portsmouth Boulevard. First responders arrived and found a man dead from his gunshot wounds, police said. The man has not been identified.

VIRGINIA BEACH — Four people and an estimated 50 dogs were displaced after a Princess Anne residence went up in flames Wednesday night, fire officials said. Units were dispatched to a home off North Landing Road at the 3800 block at around 7:35 p.m. Upon arrival about eight minutes later, firefighters found a heavy smoke around a single-story home. By 8:06, crews had extinguished the blaze, firefighters said.
