Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has secured the conviction of a man who raped a seven-year-old girl. Justice Modupe Osho-Adebiyi of the FCT High Court, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, sentenced Laminu Ahmed, 36, to life imprisonment. The trial judge held that the prosecutor from the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response unit of the Federal Ministry of Justice headed by Mrs Yewande Awopetu successfully proved the case.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has removed Olusola Ebiseni as the Labour Party (LP) candidate for the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State. In a unanimous judgment prepared by Justice Hamma Barka but read by Justice Adebukola Banjoko, the appellate court held that LP’s appeal against Ebiseni is allowed.
Similarly, Justice Abba Mohammed ruled that the appeal marked CA/ABJ/CV/1172/2024 brought by the LP against Ebiseni and two others had merit.

Managing custodial facilities in Nigeria has become more difficult due to the economic challenges in the country, the Deputy Controller of Corrections of the custodial facility in Suleja, Niger State, Ibrahim Yau, has said. Yau stated this recently during a visit by officials of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACoN) to the facility as part of efforts to improve the conditions of inmates and provide free legal services.

At least 56,131 non-sentenced inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) are currently rotting away in various custodial centres instead of serving their punishment through community service as of November 2024, data gathered by Weekend Trust shows. Experts identify lack of funding and legal conflicts as the major factors for the failure of the community service programme to take off alongside the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, when it was signed in 2015, as was expected.

Claimants of houses recently demolished in an Abuja estate have cried out over ongoing moves to sell their land to other investors. According to the claimants, who said they have filed a suit before an FCT High Court, the estate in the Sabon-Lugbe area of Lugbe, Airport Road of the Federal Capital Territory, there are alleged plans to sell the land to others at the value of N30 billion.

There are concerns that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) custodial centre in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) does not have the borstal facility to accommodate the #EndBadGovernance protest defendants as ordered by the court. Following the bail granted to the 76 defendants on Friday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu also ordered the remand of the minors in a borstal facility at the Kuje centre while the others are to be held in regular cells pending the fulfilment of the bail terms.

The Federal Government has intervened in the case of #EndBadGovernance protesters who were arraigned earlier in the day. Daily Trust had reported how protesters who were arrested during the August 1 to August 10 #EndBadGovernance demonstration were brought to a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday.
While four of them, including two minors slumped, and were taken to hospital, 114 protesters of them were granted N10 million bail each with two sureties each in like sum.
