“A bit of a reprieve.”That’s how Hyspan Precision Products President and CEO Eric Barnes described the three-month pause in reciprocal tariffs announced by the Trump Administration Wednesday. KPBS first spoke with Eric Barnes back in early March, as 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and China were about to go into effect. Hyspan is a Chula Vista-based company that manufactures metal products for industrial/commercial applications.

Only three supervisors listened to dozens of speakers Tuesday afternoon on a proposal by Acting Chair Terra Lawson-Remer. The acting chair of the board wants to modify and extend the Immigrant Legal Defense Program (ILDP). Launched in 2022, Lawson-Remer said the program has provided legal help to around 2,500 people. But the proposal failed due to lack of a quorum; supervisor Jim Desmond wasn’t there.

For more than 100 years, it stood in downtown San Diego, telling passersby the correct time of day. But in 2018, the iconic Jessop’s clock was put into storage. Now, there's an effort underway to restore the clock and give it a new, permanent home. The story of the Jessop Clock began in 1907. Joseph Jessop had relocated his family from England to San Diego. He opened a jewelry store downtown on Fifth Ave., in front of what is now the Alma Hotel.

“My fellow Americans, this is liberation day — waiting for a long time.”That’s how President Trump began his remarks at the White House Wednesday afternoon. He went on to announce a whole series of tariffs at varying levels on many countries, including a 25% tariff on imported automobiles. The president said America has been getting ripped off by friends and foes alike for decades.
