New Brunswick’s electricity provider has been fined close to $25,000 for safety violations at the troubled Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station near Saint John. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission imposed the penalty on NB Power for allowing workers to do too many overnight shifts without adequate rest before going back on the job again. But the public utility on Canada’s east coast told Brunswick News that the violations posed no safety risk to the employees, public, or environment.

New Brunswick’s Liberal government has outlined plans for a comprehensive review of NB Power, the beleaguered Crown electricity provider whose price hikes have outraged the public. But Premier Susan Holt admits the move won’t do anything to lower punishing electricity costs right away. “I don’t think there will be a silver bullet,” Holt said at a news conference in Fredericton to provide details of the review.
