As a somewhat recent transplant to Sonoma County, there are few things I miss about Arizona. But one is a quaint tradition in which public safety officials gather the local media every Thanksgiving … and ask them to warn the public of the dangers of deep-fat turkey fryers.

Did you see that an invasive species of fast-breeding giant rodents was poised to do a billion dollars in damage right here in the North Bay? Which is strange because I didn’t know the Legislature was in session. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be comparing our politicians to giant rodents. It’s demeaning and insulting. To the giant rodents. Which by the way are called nutria, and which by the way are edible. Which brings us to our Give The Editor The Bird turkey drive to benefit Redwood Empire Food Bank.

Is anybody else feeling empty and lost now that they’re no longer getting 87 texts a day from all the political campaigns? I’m from Arizona, so most of mine were even more annoying because they were written at the fourth-grade level and filled with grammatical and spelling errors. Rest easy, because even though I’m about to give you a pitch, it’s for a much better cause.

I know many of you are feeling anxious and unsettled these days. You can’t sleep. You’re irritable, maybe a little short with your spouse or the kids. Believe me I feel it too, that sense of dread weighing on my soul like a hippo sitting on a chihuahua. But people we must stay strong. The day we’ve all been dreading is almost here, but trust me, we’re going to be OK. We just need all of us to pull together as a nation and realize our common bond.

In a few short days we’ll finally be able to put our political divisions aside and focus on things that unite us, by which I mean celebrating cherished family traditions at Thanksgiving ... like getting drunk and fighting with the in-laws. Last year, however, I started something that I really hope catches on as a different kind of annual tradition: my Give the Editor the Bird turkey drive to benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank.
