Is anybody else feeling empty and lost now that they’re no longer getting 87 texts a day from all the political campaigns? I’m from Arizona, so most of mine were even more annoying because they were written at the fourth-grade level and filled with grammatical and spelling errors. I know many of you are feeling anxious and unsettled these days. You can’t sleep. You’re irritable, maybe a little short with your spouse or the kids. Believe me I feel it too, that sense of dread weighing on my soul like a hippo sitting on a chihuahua. But people we must stay strong. The day we’ve all been dreading is almost here, but trust me, we’re going to be OK. We just need all of us to pull together as a nation and realize our common bond.

In a few short days we’ll finally be able to put our political divisions aside and focus on things that unite us, by which I mean celebrating cherished family traditions at Thanksgiving ... like getting drunk and fighting with the in-laws. Apparently, I’m some sort of crypto wizard. Just look at my Facebook. I helped Pete and Stacey make a $570,000 profit, netted a $100,000 profit for Lindsay and am certified by the Academy of Financial Trading. There’s even a picture on my page of my certified “crypto coach” ID badge from Bitcoin/Forex Investment company of Santa Rosa. But I don’t know any of those people, and I never did any of those things. It’s all fake, right down to what I presume are the AI-generated photos.
Can I get away with ditching work to play in Santa Rosa’s senior hockey tournament if I write about it?

Don’t tell my boss, but I’m playing hooky this week. Or, as the Canadians spell it, hockey. The Snoopy’s Senior World Hockey Tournament has been on my bucket list for a long time, and on Wednesday I got to join with a bunch of guys, most of whom I’d never met, as a free agent, playing against another bunch of guys I’d mostly never met. They didn’t seem to mind that I skate like I’m wearing frying pans on my feet and I shoot like I’d starve in the wild. In fact, we seemed to have a lot of fun.

For every psychiatric patient languishing in an emergency department, every disabled child waiting for physical therapy and every delayed property tax bill, you’ll likely find an empty desk in Sonoma County government. And next to each vacant desk or post, you’ll see people struggling to conduct the county’s day-to-day business and maintain its safety net, working overtime and juggling tasks meant for two or more people. Many of them are burning out in the process.
