Calcagne became president and CEO of Craftmaster Furniture 11 years ago, he met with each of the company’s approximately 400 employees in groups of 25 to convey his vision for the future. Rumors were flying that the 34-year-old, privately owned upholstered furniture manufacturer was destined to become little more than a warehouse operation for its new, Chinese owners. Calcagne assured Craftmaster employees that he and the new owners planned to grow the company.

    The Corner Table has begun a strategic planning process that will guide the nonprofit as it constructs a new building and consolidates all its programs under one roof. According to a news release from The Corner Table, the organization is also exploring other possibilities, including creating a community/events area, a vocational/educational center, and a temporary shelter for those in need.

    Ripple Fiber, a fiber optic internet provider based in the Southeast, has opened a retail office in Hickory. The provider aims to bring its innovative technology to more than 16,000 homes in areas across Catawba County, including Hickory, St. Stephens and Conover. Construction is currently expected to be completed by mid-2026. During this phase, Ripple Fiber is encouraging people to preorder service, which can be done online, by phone, or in person at a Ripple Fiber retail location.

    Appalachian State University will host the second installment of The Hickory Leadership Forum on Monday, Dec. 2, in the App State Hickory campus atrium. The panel discussion — which is the second of a four-part series — will feature local leaders in education, with App State’s Reich College of Education Dean Melba Spooner moderating. App State students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend these free events, but registration is encouraged.

    Tickets are now on sale for the Jingle Bell BASH (Benefitting Arts, Science and History), the signature fundraising event of Arts Culture Catawba, formerly the United Arts Council of Catawba County. To be held on Monday evening, Dec. 9, at the newly renovated Hickory Metro Convention Center, the BASH features food, a silent auction and a draw-down raffle.
