Members of one Catholic congregation in the Triad got a double surprise when the new pope stepped onto a Vatican balcony Thursday. "We were all very excited first to hear that pope was American," explained Father Christian Goduti. "It was a source of national pride, if you will."Then came the announcement that the pontiff, Cardinal Robert Prevos, had chosen the name Pope Leo XIV. For Goduti's parish, St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, the papal transition took on even more meaning.

It was April Fools Day, so if you had told Bishop Michael Martin that he was meeting with the next pope, he likely would have laughed it off. Martin, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte, spent "45 or 50 minutes" with Cardinal Robert Prevost in his Vatican office that day. It was a common sort of meeting for Prevost, who led efforts to vet bishop nominations around the world.

Severe weather is possible in the Triad beginning late Thursday afternoon, according to forecasters. "Thunderstorms capable of large hail, including some up to 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter, and also damaging winds, are expected to spread east across the western Piedmont this afternoon and evening," the National Weather Service said in an advisory late Thursday morning. The best chance of severe weather will be between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m., the weather service said.
