A street through a Fenland town has been compared to "an air force bombing run" because of potholes and its state of disrepair. Locals using Weasenham Lane in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, say the road is blighted with potholes "as big as dinner plates". In its annual Local Authority Road Maintenance report, the Asphalt Industry Alliance said £2.1bn was needed in the East of England alone to deal with a 30-year backlog of repairs.
Iconic Flying Scotsman steams up heritage railway

One of the world's most famous steam locomotives has arrived at a heritage railway and museum for a special stay. The Flying Scotsman will be at Peterborough's Nene Valley Railway (NVR) until 9 March as part of a celebration of 200 years of British Railways, with tickets sold out for the weekend passenger services which begin on Saturday.

Residents living in a block of flats in a city said they were "fed-up" with "erratic refuse collections" which has caused a build up of rubbish outside their homes. Heltwate flats in Bretton, Peterborough, are managed by Cross Keys Homes. Peterborough City Council is responsible for collecting waste, which is disposed of using a chute system outside of the building.
Bash-prone bridge to get camera system fitted

One of the most bashed bridges in the country is to be fitted with a camera monitoring system this spring. The two-metre-high (6ft 6in) bridge at Stonea - between Chatteris and March in Cambridgeshire - carries the main Ely to Peterborough railway line. Last year it was named joint second most-bashed bridge in Britain by Network Rail with 17 official strikes, although locals claimed the figure could be double because of unreported collisions.
Pool operator apologises for ongoing closure

A Cambridgeshire town's swimming pool remains shut a month after closing for what was supposed to be routine maintenance lasting less than a week. Contractors discovered extra issues with the pool at the George Campbell Leisure Centre in March when they set out to service the filtration system last month. Many centre members pay by direct debit to swim and complained that money was still being taken despite being unable to use the facility.

Children were thrilled to see an ancient tradition revived in their playground on what is known as Plough Monday. Sutton Primary School in Cambridgeshire hosted the Mepal Molly dancers - a group of men keen to keep history alive. Plough Monday is thought to date back centuries and gave farm labourers an opportunity to make money when the land was frozen, by busking for the gentry and land owners.

A zoo has received nearly 50 donated Christmas trees as part of an annual appeal to help enrich the lives of its animals. Hamerton Zoo Park in Cambridgeshire put out a request to the public for used trees which the animals enjoy in a variety of ways. Bears and tigers like to rip them up, while small primates and possums love to hunt for food that staff hide amongst the tree's branches.
Elvis super fan says the king 'feeds my soul'

An Elvis Presley super fan says his fascination for the king of rock 'n' roll has never waned, since discovering his music almost 50 years ago. Giles Moriarty, 57, has a room in his home in March, Cambridgeshire, dedicated to the Hound Dog singer, who would have turned 90 on 8 January. He said he became enthralled by Elvis after hearing a vinyl record in his parents' collection in 1977, around the time of the star's death.
