by John Pudner [Special to MU Hoops.com]While neither David Joplin nor Stevie Mitchell would accept it as an excuse when I asked them after the game, my guess is that Mitchell playing through so much pain down the stretch likely contributed to Marquette averaging a tie in steals (6-6) over the last nine games, compared to the 10-5 edge they had in steals during their first 14 Big East games.

For the third time since inventing Value Add Basketball ratings, the player we calculate as BY FAR the best point guard in the country is on a Big East team barely considered one of the top 30 teams in the country at www.kenpom.com entering the Big East tournament. Kemba Walker's 2011 entered the Big East tournament 26th, Shabazz Napier's 2014 UConn entered at 30th, and now Kam Jones' Marquette enters 26th.

Marquette guard Kam Jones has earned Consensus Second Team All-America honors after being named to both the NABC and USBWA All-America teams on Wednesday morning. The Memphis native earned NABC Division I All-America Second Team accolades and was tabbed USBWA Second Team All-America. Earlier in the month he was named second team by the Sporting News and on Tuesday was tabbed second team by Associated Press, making him a consensus selection in a point system utilized by the NCAA.

Kam Jones Clearly Best of 68 PGs; Better Out of Conference than NM or MSUWith Marquette heading to Cleveland to face New Mexico for a shot at Michigan State, we'll start with the bad news before moving on to some much better news from a couple of key Sweet 16 indicators. One of the methods we use factors in how "hot" each team is going into the tournament, and by that measure, Marquette is currently the coldest team in the nation — ranking 68th of 68 teams in KenPom's movement since February 1.

Last year, Creighton was stunned in the opening round of the Big East tournament by Providence, seemingly entering March Madness "cold," much like Marquette is viewed this year. However, Creighton, along with Marquette—blitzed by UConn in the Big East final—and UConn, were all ranked in the top 10 against non-conference teams, and that ranking proved to be all that mattered. As usual, all three teams with top 10 marks against non-conference foes advanced to the Sweet 16.
