As the UK faces a momentous general election, which polls suggest could see the end of 14 years of Conservative party rule, the video team wants to hear from people who have a story to tell about their community. As video producers, we have spent the past four years working with community-based reporters across the UK to highlight the reality of what is happening in their areas, unearthing unique perspectives from people who are often overlooked in the story of modern Britain.

The Guardian has been working with a group of community reporters in Rochdale and Oldham who wanted to highlight the realities for women in the asylum system across Greater Manchester. Supported by the Elephants Trail, the group met women stuck in the asylum backlog, women traumatised by detention and women struggling to find housing. They were all volunteering in their communities, while reckoning with a hostile climate towards refugees and asylum seekers.

The Guardian has been working with a group of community reporters in Rochdale in greater Manchester, who turned the lens on a benefits system that they have seen unfairly penalising vulnerable people in their town. The group of reporters from the Elephants Trail met friends, family and others in the community trying to navigate the system, and consider how they can use those stories to advocate for change across the country. This film is part of a collaborative video series called Made in Britain.
