    I feel a natural defensiveness when I hear contemporary buildings criticized for their beauty. I am not an architect, but I received a professional degree in architecture. Some of the buildings that draw public ire were designed by friends, contemporaries, or former employers. I can look at almost any building so criticized and still see the evidence of their attempts to make a mark on the world, to make spaces for people to live and work. I have to admit, though, that a lot of them really are ugly.
