Okee dokee folks…’tis the season once again. The season of heat and oppressive humidity. I know that most of you folks out there like it, but not me. The only thing that makes summer even remotely tolerable is music. These days, music is the drug of choice that makes just about everything bearable! Cancer sucks. In the past couple of weeks a couple of titans in the RI music community passed away. They were both friends who I have known for decades. Chuck Wentworth and Mary Lee Partington, both wonderful, talented, and dedicated supporters of music and more were taken away by cancer. Chuck Wentworth was known for founding the Rhythm and Roots Festival, former WRIU Folk Radio host, Lagniappe Productions, The Mardi Gras Ball…too many things to list.

Okee dokee folks… The other night, on a long drive back from a gig ,my mind wandered. I was thinking about editing podcasts and the fact that I have to listen to myself talk, a lot. I tend to analyze the way I speak and don’t always like it. I used to try to not let my Rhode Island accent creep in but alas, it does. One word in particular that bugs me is how I pronounce the word “concert.” I say “kahn-sit.” Bad, I know.

Okee dokee folks… We are coming up on summer, which is festival season. Folks love festivals. But did you all know that festivals usually operate with a large volunteer staff? While some folks are paid — performers, producers, etc. — most of the day-of-show help is volunteer. Why is it this way? Because if festivals had to pay for the vast amount of help they need to operate they would be bankrupt in a minute. As is, festivals have a hard time breaking even.

Where are all the hoppy beers? I am finding a lot of the delicious hazies I have enjoyed are changing. Have you noticed this as well? WTF happened? It’s like having sex without climaxing — it’s good, just not great. I have heard from some local brewers that the trend toward sweeter beers is a request from the newly legal drinker to the seasoned.

Okee dokee folks… Last issue’s column was about the performers; this time it’s the audience. The other day I read an article about John Mellencamp “going off” on fans for screaming and yelling during a time that was allotted for him to perform quiet, solo, acoustic songs and tell stories. Instead, some drunk, stupid folks felt it was their time to be heard. Mellencamp didn’t much appreciate this and shortened his show. The rudeness of a few folks cost the many a portion of the performance.
