House edge is always an important consideration in evaluating casinos games, but in craps it’s not the only factor. Speed of play looms large in calculating average losses and your shot to win. Many bets are settled in one roll. Others take multiple rolls to decide, including pass and come, don’t pass and don’t come, place bets on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, and hard-way wagers. Single Number Bets: Also known as a straight-up bet, this is a wager on a single number. It has the highest payout but also the lowest probability of winning. Red or Black, Even or Odd, High or Low: These are even money bets, meaning you win the same amount as you bet. They’re bets on large groups of numbers and therefore offer higher chances of winning, although with smaller payouts. Dozens or Columns Bets: These bets cover 12 numbers at a time.

Blackjack Bob never was one to beat around the bush, so the first words out of his mouth as we sat down to a late-December breakfast were, "So what's this nonsense about retiring?"I'd alerted him earlier that after just about 30 years, I was ending my weekly syndicated casinos column. Full retirement? No, not yet. I'll still be writing an article or two a month for magazines and/or a blog. But I'm jumping off the weekly deadline dash.
