Ambulance firm gets extension after lapse

An ambulance company that provides both basic and advanced life support in Highlands County apparently let its county certification lapse, but county fire officials say the company has applied for an extension. According to Assistant Fire Chief Dustin Fitch, the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CoPCN) attached to Pasco-Pinellas, Hillsborough Health System Inc.
Four arrested for Lake Placid murder

Police have arrested four suspects in the murder of 21-year-old Elijah Joredell Daley, who was found shot to death at the Ramada by Wyndham motel in Lake Placid early Thursday morning. According to Highlands County Sheriff’s detectives, three young people who were in Room 224 with Daley are now charged with his murder, as is a fourth subject. In fact, detectives believe the three talked the gunman into committing the robbery that led to Daley’s murder.

Police seek answers to Lake Placid slaying

Detectives are investigating the early Thursday morning murder of a young man in a Lake Placid motel room. As family and friends of the victim, 21-year-old Elijah Daley, waited quietly on the driveway of the Ramada by Wyndham Lake Placid, Highlands County Sheriff’s detectives worked the scene in a second-floor guest room. A crime scene investigator could be seen photographing the exterior of Room 224 as a uniformed deputy stood guard nearby.
High winds damage Sebring homes

Though no one was injured, homes in the neighborhood of Francis 1 Mobile Estates in Sebring bore the brunt of heavy winds that rolled through the area Tuesday night. A forecaster with the National Weather Service in Ruskin told the Highlands News-Sun Wednesday that there were no tornadoes in the system that damaged lanais, sheds, and other structures in the neighborhood on Sebring Drive. “It was a thunderstorm with 50 mph winds that did the damage,” forecaster Nicole Carlisle said.

Phillips charged with violent crimes

The Sebring Police Department arrested Gene Andrew Phillips for attempted murder after the Sebring resident allegedly fired his gun at a man trying to drive away from Dave T’s Burgers, Wings, Seafood, Salads, and Desserts. The May 2 incident led to the arrest of Phillips, but not before he fled the restaurant in another vehicle, crawled up into a homeowner’s attic and refused to come out. He finally relented, two hours after police fired pepper balls at the attic.
Dollar General back on track

Workers at the Dollar General store site at U.S. 27 and Lake Henry Drive are busy again now that the project is back on track. After seeing no progress at the site for a couple of months, local residents asked the Highlands News-Sun to ask the Town of Lake Placid about the delay. According to planning officials, the company hadn’t finalized agreements to allow trash collection and other access.
Amazon warehouse taking shape

Amazon’s Lake Placid warehouse is coming along right on schedule. “We are scheduled to turn the building over to Amazon on Oct. 25 and they go live Nov. 25,” said Terry Crittendon, construction superintendent with Ryan Companies of Tampa. The company builds many of Amazon’s warehouses. Amazon, soon to be one of Lake Placid’s largest employers, is building a last-mile delivery warehouse at the corner of St. John Street and U.S. 27 North.
Train strikes, kills Sebring man

A CSX train was unable to stop in time before hitting and killing a man who was sitting on the tracks late Friday night. Sebring Police say the body of Highlands County resident Manuel Antiono Marquez, 47, was found 160 feet north of Helena Avenue along the west embankment of the CSX railroad tracks. Sebring Police officer Matthew Willis responded to the scene, as did Highlands County Fire Rescue, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, and CSX officials.
