    They called him the Dean of Ohio Druggist. E. R. Lash brought his drug store on South Court Street in 1873. He was still in business at the same location more than fifty years later. Lash Drug Store was known as a place for teenagers and old men to linger. As he retired, he was Ohio’s oldest druggist. In his spare time, E. R. managed the Athens Post Office from 1913-1921. He was also a trustee of Athens State Hospital. At some point he published local interest postcards, which he sold at his store.

    In the foreground of this picture are the earthmovers that will soon transform the interchange at Route 33 and Ohio Rt. 682 (The Plains Road) into a modern ‘roundabout’. Roundabouts, sometimes called ‘traffic circles’ are the big thing in Europe. So now the U.S. is jumping on the continental bandwagon. And so we should in some cases. I understand that the traffic moves quite well after a big game at Peden Stadium because of two roundabouts in Athens.

    “Hi-Yo-Silver, Away” That was the call from the ‘masked rider of the plains’ at the beginning of every radio and television show of the Lone Ranger. Since 1933, this familiar shout summoned kids, from all over the U.S. and Canada, to put on their cowboy hats, draw their toy pistols, and get ready for a new adventure with their cowboy hero. The Lone Ranger and his Indian companion, Tonto, fought for justice during the wild, early days of the American West.
