Retail sellout dropped for a second straight month in March, with average declines of 3.6% for the month — more severe than the 0.2% decline measured in February. Regionally, tire dealers in the Southwest and Northwest fared the best — meaning their declines were mild, while tire dealers in the Midwest reported a drop of 5.3% year-over-year.

FOR the moment, the pharmaceutical industry has managed to dodge the bullet of the US trade tariffs which, at the very least, seem designed to create havoc with the global trading order. The collective sigh of relief here in Mayo, where four thousand direct jobs and as many more in subsidiary employment are dependent on the pharma industry, has been palpable.

At a time when community spirit and volunteerism are thought to be in serious decline, it was doubly encouraging to attend the recent Mayo County Council Cathaoirleach Awards at Breaffy House Hotel. Close to three hundred community activists had gathered for the ceremony held to celebrate and reward the efforts of individuals and community groups who seek to make their localities, and county, a better place to live.

Our recent checks with dealers indicate that retail sellout trends were flat to slightly down year-over-year in February 2024, following three straight months of positive results and slightly behind January results.  More specifically, independent dealers highlighted average sellout declines of 0.2% in February, compared to 0.7% growth in January 2024.
