    There is no doubt that the government should be congratulated for the improvement to workers’ rights set out in the Employment Rights Bill. Trade unions have welcomed the introduction of ‘day one’ rights, the (albeit complex) provisions to limit zero hours contracts, and the restrictions on fire and rehire in particular. However, these measures come nowhere near the transformational proposals which Labour adopted in 2021 and 2022 in the form of A New Deal for Working People.

    The distinction between employed and self-employed is becoming incoherent and outdated. A quarter of a century after Alain Supiot advocated a comprehensive extension of labour and social rights ‘beyond employment’, labour-law regimes in Europe remain fundamentally anchored by the ‘binary divide’ between employment and self-employment.

    Labour's commitment to reverse the decline of unions is the only way for Britain to end job insecurity and in-work poverty — if this was ditched, it would only show that Starmer is comfortable with bosses reliant on massive exploitation to turn a profit. Since then, Labour’s Deputy Leader, Angela Rayner, has denied any watering down of the New Deal and reaffirmed Labour’s commitment to it. She is to be applauded for doing so.

    Tribune’s excellent article on Labour’s New Deal for Working People, Labour Turns Its Back on Workers’ Rights, highlighted the attempt by factions in the Labour Party to undermine this transformative policy document and, in particular, its commitment to a single status for workers. Since then, Labour’s Deputy Leader, Angela Rayner, has denied any watering down of the New Deal and reaffirmed Labour’s commitment to it. She is to be applauded for doing so.

    In his important speech at the GMB Congress in June, Keir Starmer addressed the Labour Party’s flagship A New Deal for Working People.  Launched at the Labour Party Conference in 2021, A New Deal sets out a progressive programme of workers’ rights to reset the balance of power in the workplace.
