We are reminded now more than ever of the importance of chosen family this holiday season. Next year promises to be challenging (at best) in the United States given the incoming administration, and if our elected officials in government aren’t going to look out for us (not that they ever really did before), we are going to have to look after ourselves; but what does that look like exactly? The Brisbears recently hosted their annual Bear Week Northern Exposure where they sashed a new Mr. Bear Queensland, Wesley Vanderwolf, who happens to be nonbinary. We always strive to be inclusive in our coverage and our language here at Bear World so my first question to Wesley was if I should call the title Mx. Bear Queensland to be more gender inclusive and their answer really struck me:“I’m very comfortable with the Mr. Bear title.

As America heads into uncertain times, we as bears and members of the LGBTQ+ community must draw closer to and rely on each other if we are to survive the potential oncoming onslaught. It is not the first time we have faced such challenges and thankfully our queer elders and activists are still here to show us the way and help as along.

Drag: The Musical is an exuberant, lively time at the theatre. For those expecting a bunch of RuPaul queens lipsyncing for their lives will be in for a big surprise. This show, playing Off-Broadway at New York’s New World Stages, is a fully developed two-act musical with actual singing and acting and not a series of sketches and spoofs. While the story of two competing drag clubs, both needing some financial help, isn’t a serious one, it is still a fun story worth being heard.
