The Senate on Thursday passed two energy and environment-related measures as Republican lawmakers work to undo former President Joe Biden’s clean energy policy agenda. The pair of Congressional Review Act resolutions would cancel more stringent requirements for commercial refrigerators and EPA clean air standards. One cleared for President Donald Trump’s signature (H. J. Res. 75) would reverse stricter standards for commercial refrigerators, freezers, and refrigerator-freezers.

A new warrant requirement would be imposed on a controversial spy authority under a bipartisan bill introduced Thursday in the Senate. The Security and Freedom Enhancement Act, which is cosponsored by Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), would create a point of access warrant requirement for Section 702 queries conducted by law enforcement agencies on US persons and persons inside the US, according to a bill summary obtained by Bloomberg Government.

An initiative to boost the number of technologists with AI expertise working in the government would receive a $32 million infusion under the president’s budget request for fiscal 2025. The General Services Administration, the Office of Personnel Management, and the US Digital Services—which are responsible for managing governmentwide services and contracts—are seeking the extra funding to help recruit fresh artificial intelligence talent into federal agencies.

The National Science Foundation has allocated $38 million in fresh funding for research into quantum information science and engineering. In a press release, the agency said it had awarded 22 separate grants as part of the new investment to institutions researching subjects including physics, computer sciences, materials research, engineering and chemistry.

The Office of the National Cyber Director has extended the deadline by which it is seeking to collect evidence from industry on new baseline cybersecurity requirements. Previously, members of the cybersecurity community including regulated entities, academics and nonprofits had until Sept. 15 to submit their comments. They now have until Oct. 31.
