Tara Fahmie, PhD, the new director of the MMI Department of Severe Behavior, is ready to make a difference. Dr. Fahmie joined MMI in 2019 as the associate director of the department, coming from California State University Northridge in Los Angeles, where she had spent nine years as a faculty member. “It was a big career move for me, because I was coming from a heavy teaching position to a much heavier clinical position here,” she said.

Sarosh Rana, MD, has been named the new chair of the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective Aug. 1. Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, announced the appointment Wednesday. Dr. Rana serves as section chief of maternal-fetal medicine at UChicago Medicine and a professor in the OB/GYN department at the University of Chicago.

Muhammad Salman Ashraf, MBBS, associate professor in the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases, has been appointed to the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His term on the committee begins immediately and runs through June 30, 2028. Dr. Ashraf said he was honored and humbled be invited by the CDC to serve on the HICPAC.
Leonard Tow Award recipients announced

Arika Hoffman, MD, associate professor in the UNMC Division of Transplant Surgery, and Grace Kelly, a graduating medical student, have received the 2025 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. The award, presented by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, recognizes faculty members and medical students who are exemplars of humanism in the care of patients. The award is considered the society’s highest honor.
Walk and Roll raises more than $42,000

Approximately 350 people took part in the 21st annual Meyer Foundation for Disabilities’ Walk and Roll for Disabilities, which was held March 2 at Oak View Mall. The event, which raises money for recreational activities at UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, raised more than $42,000, said Mary McHale, president of the Meyer Foundation. “The event is always special,” McHale said.
