Australia’s Chris Kovarik was one of the downhill world’s biggest stars in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Kovarik was looking like he was going to win the overall World Cup title in at least two of those years when his luck turned sour, and Kovarik suffered injuries that ended his chances of winning the overall title. Judging by what we’ve read about Kovarik, it looks like he has been one of the key people involved in training the top Australian downhill racers after his own racing days ended.

As John recalls, he talked with the two riders and they told him that they were on a brief vacation from medical school, where they were both studying to become doctors. Since they had a few days free, they decided to take a trip to Moab for a break from the pressures of school.

The latest UCI downhill points rankings for the Elite Men and Elite Women were released by the UCI yesterday. The points rankings include all the UCI downhill points recorded over the last 52 weeks (one year). Luca Shaw (ranked 11th) and Anna Newkirk (ranked 6th) are the top Americans on the men’s and women’s lists. We expect that Asa Vermette will be on the Elite Men’s list in the future, but he’s still racing in the junior ranks this year.
