JESUP – Jesup High School’s Dollars for Scholars 35th Anniversary will be celebrated Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the South Gymnasium at the school. The committee is excited this will be first time giving $100,000 in scholarships. Cathy EarlesAmong the first to receive a scholarship was Cathy Hamilton Earles of the Class of 1990. She also currently on the Jesup Dollars for Scholars (JDFS) board. “This year’s anniversary celebration is very meaningful to me,” said Earles.

LAMONT – The Lamont Community Club hosted an Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 12 at Scout Park. About 25 kids hung out with the Easter Bunny, hunted for eggs, colored pages, and enjoyed cookies and lemonade.

INDEPENDENCE – The Independence FFA Chapter held their 11th annual FFA Banquet Sunday April 6 at the Independence Jr/Sr High School. A meal was provided by Steve Flaucher and his BBQ4U crew. Indeelicious supplied blue and yellow cupcakes for dessert. After the meal community members and chapter members were recognized for their dedication and hard work throughout the past year.

ROWLEY – Eric Smith has been named the next director of the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL). He will begin in the role in August. Smith succeeds Dr. Roger Hoy, who has led the lab since 2006 and will retire later this year. The University of Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory (NTTL) began in 1920 after a Nebraska farmer turned legislator purchased a tractor that did not perform as advertised.

QUASQUETON – The Buchanan County Dairy Producers recognized local dairy producers and celebrated the next generation at their annual banquet held at Wolfey’s Outback on April 5. Darrel Lindsay welcomed the crowd and Heather Krogmann offered a prayer for Dairy Farmers and all those working in agriculture.

JESUP – Jesup Bible Fellowship Lead Pastor Clint Bunting welcomed the crowd to the fourth annual Jim Smith Remembrance 4.62 Mile Run/Walk on April 12. Sergeant Jim Smith of the Iowa State Patrol #462 was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 9, 2021. Sgt. Smith’s widow Kathy Smith thanked participants and spoke about Jim, his life, and working through grief. “Thank you all for being here today,” she said.

INDEPENDENCE – The public was invited to the Buchanan County Senior Center, 400 5th Avenue NE, for a Lunch & Learn forum in March with a representative from US Sen. Chuck Grassley’s office. Matt Rector, Regional Director for Sen. Grassley, invited by the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) to learn about the home delivered meal program and also field a few concerns from the public to take back to Sen. Grassley.

INDEPENDENCE – First Presbyterian Church hosted the penultimate ecumenical Lenten Lunch on Thursday, April 3. Lunch featured pulled pork sandwiches, sides, and a slice of pie for dessert. If you like pie, go to the Lenten Lunches. Pastor Toby Montgomery started his lesson by recounting an incident with an older home he and his wife, Pam, rented while awaiting the birth of their first child.
