Every week, Debra Brittenum visits the grave of Sister Thea Bowman at Elmwood Cemetery. For Brittenum, a Black Catholic, Bowman is an inspiration. An African American nun who was raised in the South, she has been deemed a “Servant of God” and could eventually be canonized as a saint. She lived out her faith joyfully and pushed for cultural awareness and racial harmony within the church. She also spent a career as a loving and devoted teacher.

During the Memphis-Shelby County Board of Education’s Tuesday committee meeting, Commissioner Mauricio Calvo raised a point: the primary role of the board is governance. It’s a policy-heavy, contract-heavy job, and one where sound legal advice expertise is beneficial. So, Calvo suggested that the board make the district's general counsel, Justin Bailey, its employee.

For years, the University of Memphis has run Project Memphis, a grant-funded early intervention resource agency that provides developmental therapy and support to local children. Now, thanks to several major state grants, the institution has the funds to continue providing and expanding PM’s services in the coming years. Housed in the U of M College of Education, PM has received two grants from the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging, which have a total value of $8.8 million.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools is poised to provide its safety and security officers with a new salary schedule, which could come with significant raises. The five-step, five-year payment structure was detailed in an Aug. 12 letter from Superintendent Marie Feagins to safety and security officers and sergeants, which was obtained by The Commercial Appeal. Step one is expected to start officers’ pay at $25 an hour, while the final fifth step brings them to $30 an hour.
