The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer:“The meek shall inherit the earth.” (Psalm 37:11)“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)There is a hymn that in some contexts seems almost cruel. It begins, “If you but trust in God to guide thee …” and seems to promise that if you do that everything will work out. Well it does, if you take the long-run view. After all, everything will work out, as a friend reminded me, because Revelations says so.

The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer:The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness; prepare ye the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. (Isaiah 40:3)Preachers tell us we need prophets. Prophets tell us what is really going on. They are not primarily people who predict the future. They tell us what is going on right now in our present situation and what it means in the light of the sovereignty of God.

My mother was raised by hand by a suffragette, and so it was impressed upon her that voting is a hard won right. I thought of her today after reading the story about Arizona "super voters" in the Arizona Daily Star (by Caitlin McGlade) reproduced from the Arizona Republic. “Call them super voters: about 2750 Arizonans have cast a ballot in every primary and general election for at least three decades”And I thought about Beni Witbooi, my neighbor in Berkeley back in the early 1980s.

Science may happen in laboratories, but that does not isolate it from the rest of human society. Scientists are just as likely as any of us to become concerned about what is happening in the wider world, and to feel the urge to express their views. For some of them, though, there is a residual unease about doing this that is not felt by the rest of us; because scientists work in a highly specialized arena, sometimes there is a reluctance to speak out in areas beyond their narrow expertise.
