III William Marshal died in 1219 and was succeeded as lord of Leinster and earl of Pembroke by his son, William Marshal (II), who appears to have enjoyed the best relations with the tenantry of Leinster out of all the Marshal lords. This is evident firstly in charter attestations, with Maurice fitz Gerald, and members of the Rocheforts, Herefords, and Kernets all witnessing William's charters in Ireland.
