The Melbourne Garden Cub is raising money to replace an aging and damaged memorial plaque that honors World War II veterans. The current marker declaring a stretch of U.S. 1 in Melbourne a Blue Star Memorial Highway was first installed by the club in 1951. The use of blue stars to honor military members dates back to World War I, when banners featuring single blue stars were hung in windows of homes of families who had a son serving in military. It's use expanded during WWII.
