I recently got my hands on the full set of Tolkien's History of Middle Earth, in the new matching 4 box set. Read The Lost Road, his abortive mystical time travel story where he first developed a lot of the Numebor stuff...very good stuff, kind of wish he had finished it, but it would have limited appeal with it's wood esoteric cosmic horror angle.

For spooky season, I've just started Mexican Gothic. Trying not to spoil myself, because some of the stuff seems to be very classic gothic tropes, but other elements seem to be laying tracks for a big reveal later on. Trying just to slow down and enjoy the ride.

This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we look at Lords of Creation, my pick for the weirdest RPG ever made. Maybe. Designed by Tom “B/X” Moldvay, it’s one of the first multi-genre RPGs and it marked Avalon Hill’s (failed) first foray into RPGs. And, best of all, it is full of decisions that are just absolutely perplexing. A real testament to how easy it is from RPGs to get to the outer reaches of the bizarre. * * *Instagram? Old news.

Ooooh boy. /Sam Beckett voice.There are a few things working against Catcher, starting with what @overgeeked mentioned: Americans like to be pissy about what they're assigned to do in school.And yes, Holden Caulfield is whiny, especially when you look at the fact he's from a VERY upper-middle class family: Apartment in NYC, private schools, summers in Maine.

Just finished Slayers Vol 1. It was good. The voice of the narrator/MC was delightful and funny. General Japanese fantasy, no isekai in sight. I will definitely read more of the series, but I want to poke around and read some other LNs first. The closest thing to a complaint I have about the book is there's a serious lack of description and worldbuilding. Though reading the afterword explains why. The LN was written as a one shot for a contest.

I'm reading Lisa Jackson's Left to Die, about a killer in rural Montana who shoots out the tires of cars during blizzards, causes them to crash, "rescues" the lone driver (always a woman), gives them remedial medical care to heal them up, and then days later they're found naked, tied to a tree and left to die in the freezing temperatures. He's been leaving a clue at each tree, with their (combined) initials, spaced weirdly so that it looks like he's slowly spelling out a message of some length.
