Congratulations are in order to Sinn Fein’s David Cullinane, who, like Winston Smith in George Orwell’s 1984, has won the final victory over himself. He loves Big Brother. Per the Sunday Independent’s Mark Tighe:Sinn Féin health spokesman David Cullinane has told LGBTQ+ groups that he accepts transgender women are women in a recent private meeting where he accompanied party leader Mary Lou McDonald.

Confession: Until a few days ago, I had never heard of a “skort”. Perhaps this is a male luxury, since the essential constituent parts of male attire – shirt, pants, socks, shoes, optional jacket or jumper – have remained essentially unchanged for four or five centuries. Women in that timeframe have gone through the bonnet, the corset, the miniskirt, pantsuits, and a hundred other innovations in that time.

The great thing about a crisis is that it enables people in power to do things that they would never ordinarily be able to do. Take Covid 19, for example: The outbreak of that pandemic saw Governments across the west assume for themselves “emergency powers” over public gatherings that would never have been accepted by the public in the absence of the crisis.
