Ken Hubbs school winners announced

The school winners for the Ken Hubbs Award have been chosen. The Hubbs Award is the most prestigious high school sports award in the greater San Bernardino area. The award is named after the late Ken Hubbs. Hubbs was a four-sport star and student body president at Colton Hign in the late 1950s. He played with the Chicago Cubs and was named Rookie of the Year and set fielding records in 1962. Hubbs was killed in an airplane crash outside of Provo, Utah before spring training in 1964.

REDLANDS – The fly ball disappeared into center fielder Connor Towns’ glove and the Redlands East Valley players didn’t hesitate. The Wildcats sprinted for the center of the diamond. Once there, they jumped and hugged and dumped the contents of a water bucket on coach Chris Paterson. REV’s 6-2 victory Tuesday against host Citrus Valley was history making.

BEAUMONT – Many athletes from Redlands schools excelled at the Citrus Belt League track and field finals on Thursday night at Beaumont High. Redlands High’s Su’Riah Williams won the girls’ discus with a heave of 150 feet. That just missed the meet record of Redlands’ Celeste McVey (151-3) set in 1991. Williams also won the shot put with an effort of 39-8 ½. “It’s pretty great,” Williams said. “I still feel like there’s work to be done, but I’m pretty proud of it.

REDLANDS – Redlands High boys volleyball coach Daryk Mall may not have slept soundly on Friday night. If Mall tossed and turned, it was probably because he dreamt about Kennedy of La Palma’s No. 16 Seth Sainz in a green jersey, rising from the hardwood to high point the ball, and slam it to the ground. Sainz was the difference in Kenndy’s 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 victory Friday night over the Terriers.

REDLANDS – The Redlands East Valley High softball team scored early and often on Thursday to defeat host Redlands 12-3. The Wildcats scored five first-inning runs to seize control and then cruised to victory. Alaena Martinez drove in two runs with a single in the first, while Juliane Legaspi contributed a run-scoring single, and Jadah Nordby drove in a run with a groundout. Legaspi collected three hits and drove in two runs on the day for REV.

YUCAIPA – The Redlands East Valley High baseball team lives dangerously. The Wildcats, winning their sixth one-run game (out of 11 played) defeated Yucaipa 4-3 on Tuesday in a Citrus Belt League game. “We’ve played a lot of one-run games, so we’re battle-tested,” REV coach Chris Paterson said. The victory keeps REV (15-8 overall, 8-2 league) one game ahead of Citrus Valley (12-10, 7-3) in the CBL race and nudges the Wildcats two games ahead of Yucaipa (14-9, 6-4).

As a service to you, dear reader, I will explain some of baseball and softball’s typical fan utterances:“Nobody hurt.” Translation: We just screwed up royally and may not recover, but an ambulance wasn’t summoned, so it’s all good.

REDLANDS – There were five runs scored, all in the eighth inning. There were three hit batsmen. There was a baserunner plunked in the helmet by an errant throw. And there were hurt feelings, the result of bad behavior. When it was over Tuesday, Redlands East Valley had rallied for three runs in the final inning for the second consecutive day to again stun Cajon, 3-2. Cajon seemed to be in great shape when it broke a 0-0 tie with two runs in the top of the eighth.
Winners crowned at 39th Redlands Bicycle Classic

REDLANDS – It was a perfect day for racing Sunday at the Redlands Bicycle Classic. The results could not have been, well, more perfect. That’s especially true if you were a Stage 5 winner or an overall champ, like Eder Frayre of Ensenada, Mexico. “It feels amazing,” overall winner Frayre said. “It’s a dream for a cyclist in America. I did a lot of training in the Winter and came here with a good plan and good teamwork. You can’t do it alone.

Danny Summerhill of L39ion of Los Angeles won Stage 4 of the Redlands Bicycle Classic in a tense 90-minute criterium in downtown Redlands on Saturday. Jim Brown of the Golden State Blazers took second and Ryan Gorman of Cyclesports.com was third. On the women’s side, Alia Shafi of Fount Cycling Guild won Stage 4 as she continued to shine. Jennifer Wheeler of Fount Cycling was second, and Cassidy Hickey of CCB pb Levine Law Group was third.
