The school winners for the Ken Hubbs Award have been chosen. The Hubbs Award is the most prestigious high school sports award in the greater San Bernardino area. The award is named after the late Ken Hubbs. Hubbs was a four-sport star and student body president at Colton Hign in the late 1950s. He played with the Chicago Cubs and was named Rookie of the Year and set fielding records in 1962. Hubbs was killed in an airplane crash outside of Provo, Utah before spring training in 1964.

REDLANDS – The fly ball disappeared into center fielder Connor Towns’ glove and the Redlands East Valley players didn’t hesitate. The Wildcats sprinted for the center of the diamond. Once there, they jumped and hugged and dumped the contents of a water bucket on coach Chris Paterson. REV’s 6-2 victory Tuesday against host Citrus Valley was history making.

BEAUMONT – Many athletes from Redlands schools excelled at the Citrus Belt League track and field finals on Thursday night at Beaumont High. Redlands High’s Su’Riah Williams won the girls’ discus with a heave of 150 feet. That just missed the meet record of Redlands’ Celeste McVey (151-3) set in 1991. Williams also won the shot put with an effort of 39-8 ½. “It’s pretty great,” Williams said. “I still feel like there’s work to be done, but I’m pretty proud of it.

REDLANDS – Redlands High boys volleyball coach Daryk Mall may not have slept soundly on Friday night. If Mall tossed and turned, it was probably because he dreamt about Kennedy of La Palma’s No. 16 Seth Sainz in a green jersey, rising from the hardwood to high point the ball, and slam it to the ground. Sainz was the difference in Kenndy’s 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 victory Friday night over the Terriers.

REDLANDS – The Redlands East Valley High softball team scored early and often on Thursday to defeat host Redlands 12-3. The Wildcats scored five first-inning runs to seize control and then cruised to victory. Alaena Martinez drove in two runs with a single in the first, while Juliane Legaspi contributed a run-scoring single, and Jadah Nordby drove in a run with a groundout. Legaspi collected three hits and drove in two runs on the day for REV.
