    In the 1990s, America chose to avoid regulating new digital technologies as they arose. Today, as AI takes center stage, even those leading technology companies urge a new approach to regulation. There is no excuse for our country to continue sanctioning a regulatory Wild West in the digital sector. It is past time to establish some guardrails. The regulatory landscape in AI is rapidly evolving.

    In 2012, I began as the new head of a school in Massachusetts. For many people from outside the region, the town and the school, both named Andover, are synonymous. Although the town had many other important institutions, the school was among its biggest employers and landowners, and has been central to its layout, history, and economy. When I arrived, the town’s weekly newspaper, The Andover Townsman, was produced in a bustling downtown newsroom.
