The United States government is taking a major leap forward for cybersecurity. The newly released Executive Order on Strengthening and Promoting Innovation in the Nation’s Cybersecurity calls on the US government to improve the security of its own systems. New cybersecurity procurement requirements for federal contractors will have a broad impact by leveraging the “power of the purse” to drive market demand for strong cybersecurity.

The United States House of Representatives passed a national security and foreign aid spending package on Saturday with language that would require the Chinese technology firm ByteDance to divest its ownership of TikTok, or see the app banned. The legislation is expected to quickly advance and become law, but a potential TikTok ban will likely face legal challenges.

The 20th annual State of the Net, the largest internet policy conference held annually in Washington, D.C., was dominated by discussion of artificial intelligence (AI), both on stage and off. Yet other topics remain on the agenda even after two decades — including internet access, IP protections for digital content, and online safety. At the first State of the Net in 2004, Congress was attempting to understand Web 2.0, or what we now know as social media.
