Sani-Ibrahim Azar, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the ELCA, and Susan C. The Church Council of the ELCA gathered at the Lutheran Center in Chicago, April 3-6. The council serves as the ELCA churchwide organization’s board of directors and interim legislative authority between meetings of a churchwide assembly. The council’s work, grounded in faith in Jesus Christ, focused on actions that will go before the 2025 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Phoenix, July 26-Aug. 2.

On a Wednesday morning in Rock Point, Ariz., a golden sun rises over towering rock formations. A breeze lifts red soil, blowing it across a vast landscape dotted with sagebrush. A white pickup truck pulls onto the five-acre campus of the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission (NELM) and up to its water well. Two residents of the Navajo Nation—a giant reservation covering parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah—hop out and begin filling two large, portable tanks.
