Sir John Redwood is a former MP for Wokingham and a former Secretary of State for Wales. Saturday 12 April saw a constitutional revolution. The Labour Government rammed through in a single day a Bill that overturns company and international law, giving unprecedented powers to a Secretary of State to intervene in the work and management of a private sector foreign company operating in the UK. As the company is Chinese, it may well have support from the Chinese state.

We marked last month’s fifth anniversary of the imposition of lockdown on the British people by republishing some of our articles from that week. While the mainstream media were baying for stronger and longer restrictions, we were almost alone in criticising lockdown and showing that it would have catastrophic results for zero benefit. We continue to remind readers of the weeks – and the insane policies imposed on us – that followed.

American B2 bombers are flying into Diego Garcia in the Chagos island group in case they are needed against Iran and her proxies attacking shipping in the Middle East. This should remind you how important this base is to our defence and security. The UK gives use of the main Chagos island to the US navy as a joint base in a crucial strategic location. The other islands in the group are uninhabited.

The government will not reform welfare without a faster growing economy. I am all in favour of helping hundreds of thousands of people into work and off benefits. It's a great idea to help disabled people who can do some work to get a job tailored to their abilities. This has always been a cross party aspiration. To pull this off we need a buoyant private sector recruiting more people. We need businesses generating cash and profit so they can afford the extra employees.

The government‘s idea of closer links with the EU is to help EU exports to us whilst closing down our industries at home. They want the EU to sell us more of our own fish, more of their gas and electricity, and more food whilst our farms are undermined.

The UK cannot be best friends with China, the USA and EU all at the same time. The immediate national interest is to get a trade deal with the USA. China and the EU are not about to offer us a good deal.

Mr Miliband says we must switch from gas to elecricity because it will be cheaper. My bill says electricity is four times the cost of gas per unit of energy. Consumers do not believe he is going to cut electricity costs to beat gas.
