I have discussed the Role of Community Shoreline Cleanups (6/22/22) and (7/7/25); and have also presented evidence-based studies looking at the influence of litter on perceived quality; and the psychological impact on Coastal Marine Litter (4/11/25). This week’s column will discuss the Rockaway Community Shoreline Clean-Up Stations Collaboration. It is supported by the Citizens Committee for NYC.

Wyles, Pohl, and Thompson employed college psychology students using a picture-rating task examining the influence of litter on perceived restorative quality, and the psychological impact on coastal litter. Their analysis included qualitative and quantitative methods. Their hypothesis asked, how do we understand the psychological benefits of natural coastal environments? They wanted to discover the cost of threats of increased marine litter.

Jonathan Haidt, Ph.D., is an NYU Professor of social – psychology and a New York Times bestselling author of The Anxious Generation How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. He focuses on Gen Zers born between the periods of 2012-2015 (8/16/24). The ethos of his research is on anxiety in preteens and teenagers. He discusses how social media gets children hooked by algorithms. They keep them online during vulnerable developmental stages.

In Healing With Stress is Gone (6/30/23), I discussed my participation in Brett Cotter’s online Masterclass Certification Program Stress is Gone Method (SIG). It is a  3-month class meeting one evening each week including him facilitating Meditation three mornings per week via Zoom. Brett invited me to take the courses after having experienced the tragic death of my granddaughter, Molly Jean to SIDS/SUIDS at six months of age.
