Inflation occurs when prices rise across the economy, decreasing the purchasing power of your money. In 1980, for example, unleaded petrol cost 30c a litre on average in Victoria, whereas nowadays a tank of fuel costs around $1.87 in Victoria, according to the RACV. Don’t think of inflation in terms of higher prices for just one item or service, however.
