1. IntroductionGrasslands comprise around 40% of the terrestrial landscape, almost 70% of agricultural land [1,2,3] and extend geographically from the tropics to the margins of the Arctic Circle [4]. Collectively, grasslands are home to a rich diversity of the world’s flora and fauna, and help to support an array of essential ecosystem services, including carbon source–sink balance, pollinator viability, landscape hydrology, pasture and erosion control [5,6].
