My 16-year-old son doesn’t like the way he looks. He won’t have his hair cut as he is trying to cover his face with his hair. This is causing students in his class to make nasty comments about his appearance. On occasion he is refusing to go to school because he doesn’t want anyone to see him. He is very anxious and avoids social situations. He doesn’t socialise outside school, but talks to friends online.

My 10-year-old girl is being excluded in school. She had a group of five friends (including a best friend who she has known since she was a toddler) and all was fine until about two years ago when another girl joined the group and started to try to push my girl out. There was a couple of incidents in the yard where she was physically pushing my daughter away from the group. I tried to speak to the girl’s mother, but that did not go well and she was really defensive.

QuestionMy nine-year-old son has been struggling in school for a few years. The teachers say he can be disruptive, talking out of turn and interrupting everyone. He also is tuned out with the school work and does not apply himself at all in class, though on formal tests he is quite bright. His teacher, who is very nice and patient with him, says she thinks he might have ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and needs to be assessed. This all makes sense to me, but my husband is against it.

QuestionI’m worried about my 13-year-old. She has become very private and spends lots of time alone in her room. Two years ago she was a very chatty girl telling me all her news and now she is much quieter and does not talk to me much. I don’t get any news about school. She had a couple a friends in primary school and we used to have them over to the house, but that has stopped now she is first year.

My daughter is seven and is very anxious about going to sleep at night on her own. She is fine if a parent lies in bed with her, but if we leave she can get upset. Sometimes, she will come out of the room crying that she can’t sleep and we have to go back with her. She seems to be very troubled about being unable to fall asleep immediately when she lies down. She does not provide any reason for why she feels like this and is very outgoing and happy in all other aspects of her life.
